CJ5.5? Should it stay or should it go?

Posted by taboocustoms on July 31, 2011 at 11:23 PM

So a little bit ago I purchased a complete 72 CJ5 and a CJ7 rolling chassis to start a new project.  Plan was to build a CJ5.5, basically stretch the 5 body to the 7 frame length.  Not a huge project, especially after the xj project, but still something that is gonna take some time.  All was right with the project, got the 7 frame blasted and the 5 stripped down.  Then a guy at work calls me and says he is wanting to sell a hardtop & doors for a YJ, that he is thinking about scrapping.  My heart always skips a beat when I hear jeep and scrap in the same sentence.  So I took a look at it and its no where near scrapping condition, in fact the frame is in great shape, the guys dad tried to do body work to fix the rust, but he started 3 years ago and did only a bit.  Has sat since then, and what was worked on has rusted becuase it wasnt primered anyway.  Made them an offer, price is right enough to reset a project.  Hopefully should here back from his dad this weekend, his dad had cancer removed out in Baltimore and his kids are trying to clean and fix up his house for him.

Anyway, If I get the YJ what to do with the CJ5?  The CJ projects goal was to create a strong trail rig (350, auto, 60s)  that is also street legal, and is comfortable enough for 8 hour rides.  So I could either sell the CJ, or keep the frame and tub and once the YJ is done start on the new rock crawling rig.  The XJ has turned out well, and works both as a trail rig and as a rock crawling rig for RRock, but it work great for neither.  I figure with a 5 wheelbase and being able to strip everything non-estianial for rock crawling out, that would help.
